Description:
An exploration of the cultural meaning of the Beijing 2008 Olympics. The
Olympics this summer will be examined for what it means to China, the changes
it brought about (in city planning, architecture, national self-image, hero
creation, displacement of ordinary people, government censorship of dissent,
etc.) and to the outside world’s perceptions of China. The Olympics are used
as a prism through which to glimpse at the dramatic changes taking place in
today’s China as well as in China’s role in the world.
Professor Ronald Egan, East Asian Studies, areas of research are Chinese literature and history, Chinese cultural studies. He teaches EACS 4A, Chinese 101A-B, and Chinese 158.
