Description:
This seminar will briefly cover several topics related to communication in close
relationships. Among the issues we will discuss are social attraction, conflict, sexual decision-making, jealousy, self-disclosure, avoidance, violence, and uncertainty.
These issues will be discussed in contexts such as friendships, dating relationships,
and parent-child relationships. These topics and contexts were selected because they
are generally the ones that receive the most interest from students across the many
classes Professor Afifi has taught on this and related topics.
Professor Walid Afifi, Communication, his research expertise is interpersonal communication, broadly speaking. His specific research interests are in uncertainty in interpersonal contexts … and somewhere between these two levels of specificity are his interests in communication within close relationships. He has taught courses on interpersonal communication, relation communication, nonverbal communication, conflict, sexuality and communication, social influence, as well as overview courses on communication across contexts.
