Description:
Discussion of films and a selection of short texts that address the questions
surrounding the growing acceptability of torture in today’s democracies.
Authors include Ariel Dorfman, Darius Rejali, Alfred McCoy, Jean Amery.
Films include “The Road to Guantanamo”, “Ghosts of Abu Ghraib” and
“Taxi to the Dark Side”.
Professor Elisabeth Weber, Germanic, Slavic & Semitic Studies, has taught Trauma, Memory, Historiography; German Judaism, Mysticism, Humanities and Human Rights in Times of Torture. Her research interests include French philosophy and theory, psychoanalysis and trauma studies, and German Judaism of the 10th and 20th centuries.
